東京からの友人夫婦との久しぶりの宴を楽しみ、馴染みのお茶屋を後に花見小路から八坂神社へとそぞろに歩いて向かいます。いつの間にか冷たさの和らいだ夜風は、私たちと同じ場所をめざす人たちの頬をやさしく順に撫でていきます。
神社の石段を登り境内を進んで行くと、かがり火に照らされた大きなしだれ桜が濃紺の夜空にハレーションを起こしたように白く浮かび上がります。
桜守りの十六代目佐野藤右衛門さんは桜と「対話」をしながら大切に世話をし、樹齢８０年の命を見守り続けています。井堂雅夫は、会談の中で藤右衛門さんが「すべての命はつながっている」と語ったことが自身の思いと同じで心に深く響いたと語っていました。
桜の開花はほんの一週間ほど、やっと満開かと言うときに運悪く雨が降って葉桜になってしまう事もあり、京都に住んでいてもよほど幸運が重ならないと満開の円山の夜桜を見ることは難しいのです。別の場所でも満開の桜を見つけて、こんな所に桜の木があったのだと改めて気づかされ嬉しくなることもあります。
一年かけて溜め込んだエネルギーを、たった数日の開花のために使い果たし散ってしまうというその儚さに惹かれるのでしょうか、桜という花は日本人にとって特別な花です。

"Spring evening in Gion"
After enjoying drinks with a friend couple from Tokyo for the
first time in a long time, after leaving the familiar Ochaya(Geisha Bar)
behind, we are heading to Yasaka Shrine from Hanamikoji. The night breeze,
which had gotten less chilly, gently strokes one by one the cheeks of those who
aim for the same place as us.
As you climb the stone steps of the shrine and proceed through
the precincts, the whiteness of the large weeping cherry trees illuminated by a
bonfire emerge as if it had caused halation in the dark blue night sky.
Mr. Toemon Sano, 16th generation of Sakuramori, continues
taking good care of the 80 years old Sakura while having
"conversations" with them. Masao Ido quotes a statement Mr. Toemon
said in a conference; "all lives are connected" this was not only in
accordance to his own thoughts but also stroke a chord in his heart.
The cherry blossoms bloom for about only one week, and alas,
an evil rain may turn flowers finally in full bloom into leafy cherry blossoms,
so if you are not lucky enough, it would be difficult to see the cherry
blossoms in full bloom at night in Maruyama even if you live in Kyoto.
Sometimes, finding cherry blossoms in full bloom somewhere else makes me happy
to realize anew that there were sakura trees in such a place.
Perhaps we are captured by the ephemeral nature of using the
energy accumulated over the course of a year for just a few days of blooming,
the cherry blossoms are truly a special flower for the Japanese.
