今月の作品は「静寂」です。ギャラリーの来廊者の中には時々作品の前で「うああ~、」とため息をついてたちどまる方があります。新緑の京都の爽やかな空気の中で初々しい若竹が刻々と成長する様は、見る人を元気にする力があるのかもしれません。
東北岩手の花巻に築100年を超える藁葺きの農家のアトリエを設け、40代から50代にかけてほとんど毎月、京都と花巻を行き来し創作を続けていた井堂雅夫は「東北は京都とは違い春が一気にあふれるように訪れる」と話していました。4月下旬から5月にかけて、梅、桜、チューリップ、バラ、牡丹、菜の花、フジ、芝桜などの花々が、長かった冬に蓄えたエネルギーを我先にと競うように解放し花開くさまは、まるで大地が力強く笑って生命の歓びを歌っているように見えるのでしょう。
そんな京都と花巻、それぞれのアトリエで描く作品は、テーマもモチーフもまるで違うものでした。京都では日本の四季折々の風景を描く事が中心でしたが、花巻では当時関心を持った「宇宙と生命」という命題に共鳴して知己を得た学者と研究会を開き、花巻出身である宮沢賢治の精神世界にも共鳴した作品が数多く生まれました。井堂雅夫になぜ作品が変わるのかと尋ねると、自然にそうなると話していました。
京都では自身の美への感性を刺激され、花巻では東北育ちの遺伝子が呼び覚まされ、それぞれの地でなければ描けない作品ができたのかもしれません。

“Seijyaku”
(Tranquility)
This month's artwork is Tranquility. At times, visitors to the gallery pause in front of a work of art, sighing and letting out "wows." Perhaps it is the fresh green air of Kyoto, with its young bamboo trees growing every moment, that has the power to energize the viewer.
"Unlike Kyoto, spring comes to Tohoku like a rush of flowers," said Masao Ido, who built his studio in a 100-year-old straw-thatched farmhouse in Hanamaki, Iwate in the Tohoku region and traveled back and forth between Kyoto and Hanamaki nearly every month in his 40s and 50s to continue creating. From late April to May, the plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, tulips, roses, peonies, rape blossoms, wisteria, and creeping phlox blossom and release the energy stored up during the long winter as if competing at all once, making the earth smile powerfully and singing the joy of life!
His works painted in the studios in Kyoto and Hanamaki were vastly different in theme and motif. In Kyoto, he mainly painted seasonal landscapes of Japan, while in Hanamaki, he held study groups with scholars he had come to know through their interest in "the universe and life," a theme that resonated with him at the time, with many created in accordance with the spiritual world of Miyazawa Kenji, a native of Hanamaki. When asked why his works change, Masao Ido said that it just comes naturally.
Perhaps, in Kyoto, his own sensitivity to beauty was stimulated, and in Hanamaki, the genes of his Tohoku upbringing were awakened, resulting in works that could only be painted in their respective locations.
