“from Taichoroh”
Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, was the land where Masao Ido's ancestors lived, and his family graves are also located in one of the city’s Buddhist temples. The priest of that temple taught at the university, while also doing research on the local Joseon Missions of Fukuyama. After he looked at a woodblock print from the material he had collected, he discovered Masao Ido’s work and started his relationship with him.
The priest then began a supporters’ association in Fukuyama, promoting the artworks, and was of great assistance as the leader of the Masao Ido supporters’ group, having setup an atelier in Tomonoura, from where the sea can be seen.Since then, Masao Ido would travel back and forth to Kyoto, creating works with the theme of Fukuyama, where his roots were.
Masao Ido told the priest that he heard his father say “Your ancestor was a high stipend
clansman as a Naginata Sword instructor in the Fukuyama clan”. Upon looking it up, the name of the ancestor was in fact mentioned in the genealogy of the Fukuyama clan. But he laughed and said the “high stipend” part wasn’t like that, and that maybe it was an exaggeration from passing down the story through many generations.
This month's work, "Taichoroh", is a guest hall of the Fukuzenji Temple, very close to the atelier in Fukuyama. It was used as a guest house 400 years ago, when the Joseon Missions to Japan began. Perhaps Masao Ido wanted to depict that “moment” by drawing the scenery of the small islands in Setouchi as seen from here, the border between the sky and the sea, and the white and dazzling reflections of gentle warm colors, spreading to the whole sky.
