“Irises in
Shisen-do”
In Kyoto, surrounded by mountains in its three directions, streets were developed neatly and designed in a grid that runs in every direction and the scenery has remained almost the same for 1200 years.
Shisen-do, a small mountain retreat and Zen
temple of the Soto sect is located in the northeast of downtown with its back
against the Higashiyama mountain range. It’s little far from the touristic area
of Kyoto where tourists are looking around places in a rush. Around the
retreat, the atmosphere is calm and serene except for our busiest season.
Masao Ido loved the garden landscape that
changes its colors every season and he especially loved the way the garden
looks during spring. He painted saying, “The blue of irises, pink of azaleas,
and young green leaves with their silver fur… It seems like they are competing
with one another and living intensely.”
He created a lot of Shisen-do-themed
paintings throughout his life and he chose Shisen-do as the cover of his first
collection book as a professional painter.
We believe he kept painting pictures of
Shisen-do as it was his favorite place.
