都大路の碁盤の目の北西角に足利義満が建立した金閣寺、そして北東角には孫の義政が建立した銀閣寺があります。銀閣寺という呼び名は後に金閣寺に呼応して呼ばれるようになったとされ、もともと義政が山荘として建てた銀閣寺は、当時の東山文化を背景に質素を旨とする禅寺です。
秋には錦鏡池を囲むように真っ赤に色づいた紅葉が池にも映り込み、この時ばかりは華やかで目にも鮮やかな錦織の世界に変貌します。
井堂雅夫は、この時しか描けない紅葉の銀閣寺を取材するために何種類ものスケッチブックの入った大きな袋を肩に、なるべく人の少ない朝早くに出かけます。テレビや本の取材でスケッチの場面を撮影される機会も多くあったのですが、恥ずかしがり屋の一面はいつまでも変わることはありませんでした。
この作品の版の数は50枚で、摺り回数は57度です。摺りの回数が多くなるほど、また天気によっても和紙の伸縮が起こり色版の境界部分のずれが起きやすくなるため、繊細で巧みな技が必要となります。

On the northwest corner of the
grid of Miyako-ooji (main roads), stands Kinkakuji(Gold） Temple built by Yoshimitsu
Ashikaga and on the northeast corner, Ginkakuji (Silver)Temple built by his
grandchild Yoshimasa. Said to get its name to correspond with Kinkakuji Temple,
Ginkakuji Temple originally built by Yoshimasa as a mountain cottage, is a Zen
temple with simplicity as the main principle reflecting Higashiyama culture
from that time.
In autumn, the deep-red maple
leaves surrounding Kinkyo-chi Pond are reflected in the pond, transforming the
whole landscape into a gorgeous and vivid world of Nishikiori*.
Masao Ido preferred to go out
early in the morning when there are less people, carrying a large bag with
various sketchbooks on his shoulder to draw the red maple leaves at Ginkakuji
Temple, which can be drawn only at this time of the year. He had many opportunities
to be filmed while drawing on his sketchbook for TV and book interviews, but he
had always been a shy person.
The number of woodblocks of this
work is 50 and the number of prints (presses) is 57. As the number of prints
increases, the Washi (Japanese paper) expands and contracts depending on the
weather, making the boundary of the color plate tends to shift, delicate and
skillful techniques are required.
*Nishikiori (錦織): patterned textiles with gorgeous patterns woven using gold
and silver threads.
