今年の京都の2月は特別に寒い日が続き春はまだ遠いと感じていましたが、3月も間近になるとギャラリーの庭の冬枯れた茶色い芝生のすき間に隠れて雑草があちこちに見つかるようになりました。自然の命の営みはそれぞれの出番を心得て、今年も何事もなかったように顔を出します。その柔らかな緑色の生まれたての葉の生命力に元気づけられ、ひと時これから始まる秋までの雑草との長い戦いの現実を忘れてしまいます。
三月も半ばになると、あちこちから桜の開花の知らせが届き、洛中の風景はハレーションを起こしたように一気に明るくなります。
哲学の道は銀閣寺から南禅寺へと続く疎水沿いの桜並木の道です。その桜のトンネルの下を行く肩先に、ひらひらとそよ風に吹かれた花びらが舞い降り、やがて水路の水面に浮かんでゆっくりと花筏となって流れていく様子を見ると「今年もまた見られた」といつも幸せな気持ちになります。
井堂雅夫が桜を描いた作品は、そのほとんどが花びらが舞う刹那の風景です。蕾から満開となり、散っていく短い命を全うした姿に強く惹かれていたのではないかと思っています。

This year, February has been extraordinarily cold in Kyoto, and spring still feels like miles away. But as March is just around the corner, weeds are starting to peak out from their hiding spots between the gaps of the wintry brown grass of the garden in front of the gallery. In the workings of nature, everyone promptly takes their turn, appearing this year as well, as if nothing was amiss. My spirits are lifted by the force of life of the newly sprung soft green leaves, and for a moment I forget the reality of the long battle that awaits me, fighting weeds from now until autumn.
With the arrival of the middle of March, we start hearing about the cherry blossoms blooming here and there, and all at once, the scenery in the city becomes as bright as if it could cause a halation.
The Philosopher’s
Path continues from the Ginkakuji Temple to the Nanzenji Temple, along the
waterway lined up with cherry blossom trees. Every year when walking through
the tunnel of cherry blossoms, petals are dancing in the wind on my shoulders, to
eventually float on the water surface that slowly turns into a floral raft. As
I feel overjoyed from looking at it, I think to myself “I got to see it again this
year”.
Most of the cherry blossom works by Masao Ido depict momentary sceneries with dancing petals. I believe he was strongly drawn to how they fulfill their short lives, from buds to full bloom, and then to eventually scattering away.
