四月。桜が風に舞い、散り始める頃になると、入れ替わるように藤の花の便りが聞こえるようになります。この頃の京都ではまるで舞台の書き割りが展開するように、次々と花の主役が交代していきます。
この作品は春風に揺れる藤の花と八坂の塔を近景に京都市街を見下ろした、うららかな春の風景です。
昨年の秋の終わり、寒空のもとギャラリーの入り口の壁で何日も動かないカマキリがいました。近くに餌場があるわけでもない所で、そのカマキリは何日も動かず力なく風に揺れていたのですが、ある朝そのカマキリが姿を消し、壁に卵が産み付けられていました。白い壁の目立つ場所に茶褐色の卵鞘が貼り付いているのは美観としては気になるところですが、命を繫いでいこうとする姿に心が動き、今はその先の新しい命の誕生の物語を楽しみに見守っているところです。
井堂雅夫の水彩画などのモチーフにも時々カマキリが登場しています。なぜカマキリを描くのかと尋ねられると、その動きと形がおもしろいと答えていました。今、井堂雅夫が健在なら、たくさん生まれた子供たちに目を輝かせながらスケッチをしたのではと思います。

April. As cherry blossom petals dance in the wind starting to fall, wisteria flowers start to bloom in place of them. At this time in Kyoto, the leading roles of flowers take turns one after another as if a stage scene were being unfolded.
This
work depicts a glorious spring landscape overlooking the city of Kyoto with
wisteria flowers swaying in the spring breeze and the Yasaka Pagoda in the foreground.
During the late autumn of last year, I found a praying mantis on the wall of the entrance to the gallery that did not move for days in the cold weather. Despite the absence of hunting ground in the surroundings, the praying mantis was motionless for days, swaying helplessly in the wind, until one morning, it disappeared and its eggs were laid on the wall. Although the brown egg case stuck conspicuously against the white wall might mar the beauty of the wall from aesthetic point of view, I was moved by the way the praying mantis passed its life to the next generation and now I’m looking forward to witnessing the birth of new lives that lies ahead.
Praying mantises sometimes appear as motifs in Masao Ido's watercolor paintings and other works. When asked why he paints praying mantises, he replied that their movement and shape are interesting. If Masao Ido were alive and well today, he would sketch the newly-hatched praying mantis babies with a sparkle in his eye.
