井堂雅夫は、2000年1月からスタートしたNHKの「趣味悠々」という番組で、13回にわたり木版画の講師を務めました。「風見鶏」はその時に制作し、テキストにも掲載されている作品です。
番組の撮影は前年9月から年末まで行われました。今では不可能と思われますが、神戸の異人館街にある重要文化財「風見鶏の館」の一室がアトリエとして設えられ、そこをベースに神戸港、南京町、灘の酒蔵などでたくさんのスタッフが参加し撮影が行われました。井堂雅夫もそのロケの度に、彫り摺りの道具を車に積み込み京都から神戸へ向かいました。何度も通ううちに道のりにも馴染み、高速のトンネルを抜けて神戸の六甲山が見えると「さあ、着いたな」と気合いを入れるのがルーティーンでした。
この番組の影響力は想像を超え、多くの反響が長い間続きました。木版画をひとりでも多くの人に知って欲しいとの思いで活動を続けていた井堂雅夫にそれはとても大きな後押しとなりました。小学校での木版画授業や新聞雑誌テレビなどでの紹介や講演依頼などの機会も一気に増え、創作活動と周知活動にますます情熱的に取り組む日々となりました。
Kazamidori
(Weathercock)
Masao Ido taught woodblock printmaking for
13 times on NHK's "Shumi-Yuyuu" program, which started in January
2000. “Kazamidori” is the work he created at that time and is also included in
the textbook.
Filming for the program took place from
September of 1999 until the end of that year. Although it seems impossible
today, a room in the Kazamidori no Yakata (The former Thomas House) National
important cultural property in Kobe's Ijinkan district, was set up as a studio.
Based there, filming took place at the Port of Kobe, Nankinmachi, and a sake
brewery in Nada, with the participation of many crew members. On each of those
locations, Masao Ido loaded up his car with carving tools and headed from Kyoto
to Kobe. After many trips, he became accustomed to the route, and when he
passed through the highway tunnel and saw Mount Rokko in Kobe, he would say to
himself, “Well, we've arrived”.
The tv show's impact was beyond imagination
and the response was so great that it lasted for a long time. It was a huge
boost for Masao Ido, who had been working to make woodblock prints known to as
many people as possible. The opportunities to give woodblock print classes at
elementary schools, to be introduced in newspapers, magazines, and TV programs,
and to be asked to give lectures increased dramatically, and he became more and
more passionate about his creative activities and showing to everyone his work.
