Koto Boshoku (Colors of the Ancient Capital)
This
month's artwork is the five-story pagoda of Toji Temple.
It is
the tallest wooden tower in Japan, with a height of about 55 meters up to the
nine-ringed buttress. It has remained unchanged for 1,200 years since the first
pagoda was built east of Rajomon, the main gate of Heiankyo, and continues to
watch over the history of the ancient capital.
Whenever I see this huge black tower from the window of a bullet train or from inside a car, my heart always beats a little harder against my chest due to its strong presence.
Every time Masao Ido visits this tower, he says that the beauty of each wooden structure is so beautiful that he never gets tired of looking at it and is fascinated for a long time.
He has
made it into his artworks many times.
The gallery, which is said to be almost as high as the top of this pagoda, and the area around Kinkakuji Temple are finally starting to feel the signs of autumn, and the number of visitors from Japan and abroad is increasing little by little.
We would like to change the outside display window to this Koto Boshoku and welcome visitors to the gallery, beginning again with a renewed spirit, continuing where we left off up to three years ago.
