“Autumn in the Imperial Palace”
In November, ginkgo trees along the roads running from north to south in Kyoto turn yellow one by one, making it the time of year when you can feel the arrival of autumn in full swing.
The ginkgo tree in this month's piece, "Autumn in the Imperial Palace," is located just inside the Inui Gomon Gate in the northwestern part of the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. Many Kyoto residents can tell from the Kogomon Gate in the background and the distinctive shape of the beloved ginkgo tree that this is it right here, just inside the Inui Gomon gate.
I believe that Masao Ido was able to create this piece since the autumn leaves of this tree in the Imperial Palace, which he had been familiar with since his days as an apprentice, left a deep impression on him and was etched into his memory.
Since a young age, it was a common sight for Masao Ido to come home from a walk outside and find from his coat pockets pebbles, nuts, and leaves of unusual shapes and colors, which are all lined up on his desk and waiting to be sketched by him.
After sketching this scene, he may have taken home with him in his pocket as usual a leaf he had examined and selected from among the fallen ginkgo leaves depicted in his piece.
