夜明け
一年で一番夜が長い日、冬至。今期の冬至は12月22日でした。これからは日に日に昼の時間が長くなると思うだけで明るい気持ちになります。
伊勢神宮では冬至の前後それぞれ一ヶ月の期間、朝早くから人々が参拝に訪れます。内宮の五十鈴川に架かる宇治橋の前の鳥居の中を朝日が昇るのを見るためです。
期間の中でも元日のそれは特別です。きりりと澄んだ空気の中で朝日を拝み、新しい一年が幸多い一年となるよう願うひとときです。
井堂雅夫は、朝日が鋭く照らし作り出す鳥居の光と陰の強いコントラストを描いています。そこに漂う冷たく澄んだ空気を表現することにより、元日の朝という特別な日の伊勢神宮の厳粛な佇まいを描いたのではないかと感じます。

The winter solstice is the longest night of the year. This term's winter solstice was December 22. Just the thought of the daylight hours getting longer day by day from now on makes me feel cheerful.
At Ise Jingu Shrine, people visit the
shrine from early in the morning for a month before and after the winter
solstice. The reason for this is to watch the morning sun rise through the torii
gate in front of the Uji Bridge over the Isuzu River at the Inner Shrine.
New Year's Day is special among all the
other days of the year. It is a time to worship the sunrise in the crisp, clear
air and wish for a happy new year.
Masao Ido depicts the strong contrast
between the light and shade of the torii gate sharply illuminated by the
morning sun. By expressing the cold, clear air that floats there, I feel that
he may have depicted the solemn appearance of the Ise Jingu Shrine on the
special morning of New Year's Day.
