東山散策
千年の都と言われ日本文化の中心地であった京都の洛中には御所を中心として伝統の技術を持ち、お互いに関連したものづくりをする職人や商人たちが集まって暮らした地域が「糸屋町」「麩屋町」「数珠屋町」などの町名となり今も住所として使われています。
高度成長時代には、惜しげもなく解体されてしまっていたこれらの町屋も今はその価値が見直され、形をそのままに小さなホテルや店舗にリノベーションされて街の情緒が維持されることも増えてきました。それでも日本の木と紙の文化は西欧の石の文化に比べて火災などで失われやすく、今月の作品の三年坂のように清水寺の門前町として国内外から多くの観光客で賑わう通りの両側に続く京町家も伝統的な建造物群の保存地区に指定されています。
“Higashiyama Stroll”
In Kyoto, the center of Japanese culture for 1,000 years, there are many town names such as "Itoya-cho," "Fu-ya-cho," and "Suju-ya-cho," where craftsmen who made related products gathered and lived, which have remained here and there.
These townhouses, which were unceremoniously demolished during the high-growth era, have recently been reevaluated in terms of their value, and more and more are being renovated into small hotels and stores while retaining their original form to maintain the atmosphere of the town.
This month's work is located on Sannenzaka, a street in front of Kiyomizu-dera Temple that attracts many tourists from home and abroad. The traditional machiya townhouses that line both sides of the street are designated as a preservation area for traditional buildings.
