虫明の朝
一時期、先祖の暮らした広島県の福山市にアトリエを構えていた井堂雅夫は、二三週おきに京都と福山を往復する生活を送っていました。その頃、瀬戸内周辺の本州と四国のいくつかの主要な都市で井堂雅夫の作品を熱心に広めていただいた画商さんの案内で、地元を取材した風景が作品となっています。
この作品はその内のひとつで中世以降、風待ち湊として栄えた岡山県の東部にある虫明湾の風景です。多島美と評される瀬戸内の風景の中でも、毎年9月1日からの一週間はこの湾を囲む島の間から登る朝日の美しさは特別とされており、古くは平安時代の和歌にも詠まれています。夜の闇からやがて朝日が水平線を越えて登りはじめると空と海が真っ赤に染まり、島々とその間を縫うように浮かぶ牡蠣筏が黒いシルエットとなって浮かび上がります。
自然の中にある、あらゆる生命のエネルギーの存在を、直感的な感性で受け止めていた井堂雅夫は、その様子を目の当たりにして力強い波動を感じながらスケッチをしていたのかもしれません。
“Morning of mushiake”
For a time, Masao Ido had a studio in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, where his ancestors lived, and he spent his time traveling back and forth between Kyoto and Fukuyama every two or three weeks. At that time, he was guided by an art dealer who enthusiastically promoted Masao Ido's works in several major cities in Honshu and Shikoku around the Seto Inland Sea, and his works are based on local landscapes he covered.
This work is one of them, a view of Mushiake Bay in the eastern part of Okayama Prefecture, which has prospered as a wind port since the Middle Ages. Among the scenery of the Seto Inland Sea, which is known for its many islands, the beauty of the sunrise that rises between the islands surrounding the bay during the week of September 1 every year is considered to be particularly beautiful, and was even written about in a waka poem from the Heian period. As the sun rises over the horizon from the darkness of night, the sky and sea turn a deep red, and the islands and the oyster rafts that weave between them emerge as black silhouettes.
Masao Ido, who had an intuitive sensitivity to the presence of all kinds of life energy in nature, may have been sketching while feeling powerful vibrations as he witnessed this scene.
