今月の作品は世界で一番知られている浮世絵、北斎の「神奈川沖浪裏」です。ギャラリーでは北斎を始め、広重や写楽、歌麿など浮世絵のアンティークを平置きで展示してきましたが、新しく、独立した浮世絵のコーナーを造り、よりたくさんの作品をご覧いただけるようになりました。
この北斎の「神奈川沖浪裏」は19世紀初頭から増え始めた木版画の版元が次々と新作を競って出版していた1830年頃に初版が発刊され、その後も人気に後押しされ何度も復刻・再版されてきましたが、今回ご紹介する浪裏は私共が運営する版元である歓栄堂が制作したものです。
浮世絵のサイズは和紙の漉き枠に合わせた大奉書版の半分の大きさの大判と呼ばれるB4判位のサイズが主流でした。江戸時代の暮らしの中では手に取って眺めて楽しんだ浮世絵したが、歓栄堂版では現代の暮らしに合わせ壁に架けて楽しめるよう、ひとまわり大きいサイズで制作したものです。
井堂雅夫の木版画作品を紹介するために開いたこの画廊も43年目となり、来年の4月には井堂雅夫没後10年を迎えます。
今までも井堂雅夫を中心に据え、他にも私共で木版画家としてデビューした本荘正彦や日本画の木版画作品、アンティークの浮世絵などをご覧いただいて来た中で、限られた壁面でどのように分かりやすくテーマ分け展示が可能か試行錯誤して来たのですが、ようやくひとつの形の実現にたどり着きました。
これからももちろん井堂雅夫の作品を中心としながら、版元としても木版画の歴史や道具、技術への理解がもっともっと拡がるような展示や活動を心がけていきたいと考えています。

“Katsushika Hokusai: Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji”
This month's featured work is the world's most famous ukiyo-e print, Hokusai's “The Great Wave off Kanagawa.”
While
our gallery has always displayed antique ukiyo-e prints by Hokusai, Hiroshige,
Sharaku, Utamaro, and others in a laid-flat display, we have now created a new,
dedicated ukiyo-e section, allowing visitors to view a greater number of works.
This Hokusai print, “The Great Wave off Kanagawa,” was first published around 1830, during a period when woodblock print publishers, whose numbers had begun increasing since the early 19th century, were competing to release new works. Driven by its popularity, it was reprinted and republished many times thereafter. The version of The Great Wave we present here was produced by Kaneido, the publisher we operate.
The
standard size for ukiyo-e prints was known as “ōban,” which was half the size
of the large washi papermaking frame and roughly equivalent to B4 size. In the
daily life of the Edo period, ukiyo-e prints were enjoyed by holding them in
hands and gazing at them, but the Kaeiodo edition is produced in a slightly
larger size to be hung on walls and enjoyed in modern living spaces.
This gallery, opened to introduce Ido Masao’s woodblock prints, is now in its 43rd year, and next April will mark the 10th anniversary of his death.
We have
long centered our exhibitions around Ido Masao, while also showcasing works by
Masahiko Honjo, who made his debut as a woodblock artist with us,
Japanese-style woodblock prints, and antique ukiyo-e. At the same time, we also
have been experimenting with how to clearly organize our limited wall space
into thematic displays, and we have finally arrived at a form that works.
While
continuing to focus on Ido Masao's works, we also aim to expand people’s
understanding for woodblock print history, tools, and techniques even more as
publishers through exhibitions and activities.
