最新の高層ビルが建ち並ぶ大都会東京の都心にありながら、ゆったりと落ち着いた時が流れる上野の不忍池。この近くに学問の神様として知られる菅原道真を祀る湯島天神はあり、毎年2月に入ると道真公が愛したと伝わる紅白様々な種類の梅が境内を彩ります。
井堂雅夫が営団地下鉄(現・東京メトロ)から依頼を受けたプリペイドカードのために制作した東京十景の中のひとつがこの作品です。旧東京駅、佃の船だまり、浅草寺、上野公園など、このシリーズに井堂雅夫が選んだモチーフは時代が変わっても記憶に遺したい風景でした。このブログに掲載する作品にしようと改めてゆっくり見ていると、当時から東京の百景を目指したいと話していたことが蘇りました。
きっと今も空の上の世界でいつもと変わらず楽しげに机に向かって続きの作品を制作しているに違いありません。

“Yushima Tenjin”
Nestled in the heart of Tokyo's metropolis, where the latest skyscrapers stand tall, lies Shinobazu Pond in Ueno, where time flows gently and calmly. Nearby stands Yushima Tenjin Shrine, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, revered as the god of learning. Every February, the shrine grounds are adorned with various red and white plum blossoms, said to have been beloved by Lord Michizane.
This work is one of the Tokyo Ten Views created by Masao Ido for a
prepaid card commissioned by the Eidan Chikatetsu (the Tokyo Metro). The motifs
Ido Masao selected for this series—the Old Tokyo Station, Tsukuda Boat Basin,
Sensoji Temple, Ueno Park—were scenes he wished to preserve in memory, even as
times changed. Looking at this piece again, chosen for this blog post, I
recalled how he spoke back then of aspiring to create Tokyo's Hundred Views.
I'm sure he's still up there in the world above, cheerfully working at his desk
as always, creating the next piece.
