ギャラリー雅堂だより 2021年1月「清澄薬師寺」

 

 新しい一年が始まった奈良の朝。

日が昇るに連れて辺りの空気が紫色に染まってゆく。

若草山を背景に薬師寺の東塔と西塔の上の九輪が朝日に輝いている。

「大和は国のまほろば　たたなづく青垣　山こもれる　大和しうるわし」

8世紀初頭の奈良時代に、現存する最古の書物である古事記にある和歌で、奈良はとても美しくそして住みやすい、本当に素晴らしい理想郷だと詠まれています。

 井堂雅夫が暮らした京都も奈良と同じく「古都」と表現されますが、ふたつの古都にはそれぞれに違った味わいがあるように思います。

京都の、こじんまりとした中に雅やかな「こと」や「もの」がぎっしりと詰まっていると言う感じの町に対して、奈良はこの和歌が詠まれた1300年前から変わらず遺り続けてきた大きな空間とゆったりとした時間の流れに包まれる安堵感が多くの人を惹きつけているのではないかと思います。

 井堂雅夫の奈良でのスケッチにはアップの構図は多くありません。その場所の空気感を描こうとしていたのかもしれません。

井堂雅夫はそんな奈良の魅力をこの「清澄薬師寺」の中では紫色を使った空気感で表現しようと試みています。他の作品にもあまり使わない紫色が、水面にも木々にも山並みにも、そして空の雲にも映り込んで、新しい一年の吉兆を予感させてくれるような作品です。

"Seicho Yakushi-ji Temple"

The morning of Nara when a new year began.

The rising sun dyes the surrounding atmosphere in purple.

With Mt. Wakakusa in the background, the nine rings ovet the east and west towers of Yakushi-ji shine in the morning sun.

"The greatest and most splendid land of Yamato, its green range of mountains, filled with the allure of Yamato"

In the Kojiki, the oldest surviving book in the Nara period of the early 8th century, Nara is described as a truly wonderful Arcadia really beautiful and comfortable to live in.

 Masao Ido, described Kyoto, where he lived, as an "ancient city" like Nara also, but I think that each of the two ancient cities have a different flavor.

In contrast to Kyoto's modesty, a town packed with elegant "events" and "things," Nara has remained unchanged since around 1300 years ago when this waka poem was composed, I think that many people may be attracted to the relief of being surrounded by a large space and a relaxing flow of time.

 Masao Ido's sketches in Nara do not have many close up compositions. He may have been trying to portray the location’s atmosphere.

Masao Ido is trying to express the charm of Nara with a purple atmosphere in this “Seicho Yakushiji". Purple, which is rarely used in other works, is reflected on the surface of the water, trees, mountains, and clouds in the sky, giving an auspicious hint of a newly born year.
