連日世界から多くの観光客が訪れる清水寺の舞台は、周囲を圧倒するように重厚で巨大な木組みの上に設えられ深い緑の山々に囲まれていて、普段はそこに桜の木があることをすっかり忘れているのですが、春のほんの数日間だけは私たちを圧倒させるような迫力で一斉にその花を開花させ、辺りの景色を華やかにそして雅やかに一変させてしまうのです。
二年坂のアトリエ時代、井堂雅夫は清水寺や門前町の方々にご縁を得て、特別の許可をいただき境内の重要文化財である経堂で作品を展示する機会を得ました。それは世界中の多くの人々に日本の誇る伝統技術である木版画文化を知ってほしいと願う井堂雅夫への大きな後押しとなりました。
The cherry blossoms in Kiyomizudera
The stage of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, which attracts
many tourists from all over the world every day, is built on a massive wooden structure
and surrounded by deep green mountains, so that we usually forget that there
are cherry trees there. For a few days in spring, however, the cherry blossoms bloom at once with an intensity
that overwhelms us and transforms the surrounding landscape into a gorgeous and
elegant one.
During his studio period at Ninnenzaka, Masao Ido was given special permission
by Kiyomizu-dera Temple and the people of the town in front of the temple to
exhibit his works in the Kyodo Hall, an important cultural asset within the
temple's grounds. This was a great encouragement for Masao Ido, who wished to
introduce the culture of woodblock prints, a traditional technique of which
Japan is proud, to many people around the world.
