水が入った棚田に空の青が映り込み、若緑の苗にやさしい風が渡って行く岐阜県恵那の風景です。
このような谷あいの傾斜地に作られた段々畑にはトラクターも入れず、人の手による世話が不可欠のため、やがては見られなくなってしまうかもしれない日本人の心に染みる懐かしい風景です。
世界でも大切に引き継がれて来た文化が伝承できず途絶えてしまうと復活は困難です。そしてそれはその国の人々のアイデンティティまでも曖昧にしてしまうのではないかと不安を抱きます。
私たち木版画の世界でも年々版木や和紙などの材料や、彫り･摺りの技を引き継ぐことが難しくなってきている事を実感しています。そこで少しでも木版画の良さを知ってもらいたいと、画廊の外を通る人たちに向けて木版画の歴史や技・道具・材料などをわかりやすく画像にした大きなパネルを貼り出しました。
井堂雅夫の作品を通して木版画の素晴らしさを知っていただけたら嬉しいと思っています。

“Morning terraced rice field ”
This is a scene from Ena, Gifu Prefecture, where the blue of the sky is reflected in the water-filled terraced rice paddies and a gentle wind blows across the young green seedlings.
These terraced fields, built on the slopes of valleys, cannot be accessed by tractors and must be tended by hand, so they are a nostalgic scene that may soon disappear.
It is difficult to revive a culture that has been carefully handed down throughout the world if it cannot be handed down and ceases to exist. It is also a cause for concern that the identity of the people of the country may become ambiguous.
In the world of woodblock prints, too, we realize that it is becoming more and more difficult to pass on materials such as woodblocks and Japanese paper, as well as carving and printing techniques, year by year. To help people understand the beauty of woodblock prints, we put up large panels with easy-to-understand images of the history, techniques, tools, and materials of woodblock prints for people passing by outside the gallery.
We would be happy if visitors could learn about the excellence of woodblock prints through Masao Ido's works.
