今月の作品は紅葉に映える京都永観堂です。
2004年10月、井堂雅夫はご縁をいただき永観堂の多宝塔を肉筆で描いた作品を永観堂に寄進しました。そしてそれを記念して堂内で展覧会をさせていただくことになり、国内外からのたくさんの参詣者に作品をご覧いただく事ができ、スタッフ一同とても嬉しく張り切った期間中のことを懐かしく思い出します。
この作品は、その肉筆画を原画として木版画で再現しようとするため45枚の色ごとの版木を彫り、その板を使って56回も摺り摺り重ねた、かなり重厚な出来上がりです。北斎の浮世絵「神奈川沖浪裏」が7度摺りで出来上がっていることを見ると、彫り師、摺り師の巧みで多様な技術による表現力に改めて驚くばかりです。

“Kinsyu Eikando”
This month's artwork is of Eikando Hall in Kyoto, Japan, in the autumn leaves.
In October 2004, Masao Ido had the opportunity to donate to Eikando a work of art depicting the pagoda of Eikando with his own hand. The exhibition was held in the hall to commemorate the donation, and I fondly remember how happy and excited we all were to be able to show our work to so many visitors from Japan and abroad.
This work is a very massive work, made by carving 45 woodblocks for each color to reproduce the original painting in woodblock prints, and then printing 56 times on the woodblocks. When we see that Hokusai's ukiyoe "Kanagawa Okinamiura" was printed seven times, we are again amazed at the skillful and diverse techniques used by the carvers and printers to express their work.
