幼少時代を過ごした岩手にいつか戻りたいと願っていた井堂雅夫は、縁をいただき田畑が拡がる中にある藁葺きの農家をアトリエにして京都と岩手を行き来しながら制作を始めました。
そこに隣町の老夫婦が訪れ、家を手放すので自宅の樹齢40年になる枝垂れ桜をもらってほしいとの相談をいただき、冬の寒い日に桜は10キロの道のりを大勢の人の助けを借りて運ばれ、アトリエの庭に無事移されました。移植から半年に満たないため、その年の桜は見られないだろうと誰もが思っていたところ、春の訪れと共に可憐な八重桜が健気に咲き、訪ねてきた以前の持ち主の老夫婦や移設を助けた人たちを驚かせ喜ばせました。
井堂雅夫はこの桜の幹を両腕に抱え、「命の鼓動を刻む桜に魂の交信で私の感動を伝えた」と語っていました。

“Bloom”
Masao Ido, who had always wished to someday return to Iwate where he spent his childhood, received an opportunity to use a thatched-roof farmhouse amid expansive fields as his studio, and began creating works while commuting between Kyoto and Iwate.
One day, an elderly couple from
a neighboring town visited him, asking if he would take a weeping cherry tree
in their yard that was around 40 years old, as they were planning to leave
their home. On a cold winter day, the cherry tree was transported over a distance
of 10 kilometers with the help of many people and was safely planted in the
studio's garden. Since less than six months had passed since the transplant,
everyone thought that there would be no blossoms that year. However, with the
arrival of spring, delicate double cherry blossoms bravely bloomed, surprising
and delighting the elderly couple who had previously owned the tree and the
people who had helped move it.
Masao Idō hugged the trunk of this cherry
tree with both arms and said, 'I conveyed my emotions to the cherry tree, which
beats with the pulse of life, through a spiritual connection.'
