ギャラリー雅堂だより 2020年9月 「緑陰」

京都市内の北西部から国道162号線を車で北へ2時間ほど行くと日本三景のひとつに数えられる天橋立のある日本海に抜けることが出来ます。その途中、京都市内から20分ほどで道幅は狭くなり、美しく手入れされた北山杉が端正に並ぶ山あいを縫うような道が続く「三尾」と呼ばれる地域に入ります。

 三尾とは高尾山神護寺・槙尾西明寺・栂尾高山寺という山号を持つ寺のある地域を人々が山号で呼ぶようになり、その3カ所を総称したものと言われています。

 秋の紅葉の季節には多くの人が訪れる神護寺ですが、「緑陰」のモチーフとなっているのは青紅葉が美しい季節です。清滝川にかかる橋を渡り、石段が続く山道の参道を15分ほど上りきり空を見上げると、そこに大きな楼門が迫ります。その手前にある茶屋は目にも鮮やかな緑の木々と毛氈の赤とのコントラスト、それをさらに際立たせる床に落ちる光と陰が映えて、まさに井堂雅夫の表現したい「IDO GREEN」、そして「光と陰」の世界です。

 IDO GREEN とは、井堂雅夫の作品に多用される緑色が好きだと、たくさんの作品をコレクションするアメリカ人が表現した言葉です。たしかに井堂雅夫は微妙にニュアンスの違う何色もの緑色を駆使して独自の味わいのある作品を生み出していたことから、私たちもこの言葉を使わせてもらうことにしました。

 光と陰、これも井堂雅夫の作品を語るときとても大切な要素のひとつです。これについてはまた次の機会にお話ししたいと思います。

 

Blog post September 2020 "Ryokuin"

The Sea of ​​Japan in Amanohashidate, deemed one of the three most scenic spots in Japan can be reached heading north for about 2 hours on Route 162 from the northwestern part of Kyoto City. Along the way, about 20 minutes from Kyoto city, you will enter an area called "Sanbi" when the width of the road narrows, where beautifully trimmed Kitayama cedars line up neatly weaving a road that continues through the mountains.

 Sanbi is a general term for which people have become accustomed to refer to the area of the three temples with the honorific mountain prefixes of Mt. Takao Jingo-ji, Makinoo Saimyo-ji, and Togaonoo Kosan-ji Temples.

 Jingo-ji Temple is visited by many people during the autumn leaves season, but the motif of "Ryokuin/Rie" is the season when the foliage has not turned red and looks beautiful. Across the bridge over the Kiyotaki River, going up the mountain road with stone steps for about 15 minutes, a large Romon two-storied gate can be seen approaching looking up at the sky. In the teahouse in front of it, is exactly what Masao Ido’s "IDO GREEN" wants to express, and a world of "light and shade", the contrast between the vivid green trees and the red carpet of leaves, and the light and shade falling on the floor that further accentuates it.

 IDO GREEN is an expression coined by an American collector of many works, showing the fond of green color that is often used in Masao Ido's works. From the fact that Masao Ido made full use of various shades of green with slightly different nuances to create works of a unique taste, we decided to use this term as well.

 Light and shade are also one of the most important elements when talking about Masao Ido's work. We would like to talk about this again at another opportunity.
