Blog post October 2020 "Itsukushima Shrine"
The Otorii floats on the sea in a straight line from the main sanctuary of Itsukushima Shrine of Miyajima.
I do not understand how something that
weighs 60 tons and it’s not fixed can stand unsupported.
Located in the calm sea of Setouchi, this Torii has been standing in this sea with an
unchanging tranquility while seeing several historical dramatic events pass by for
1400 years.
Masao Ido, whose paternal ancestor was from Hiroshima Prefecture, temporarily set up an atelier in Hiroshima that he visited frequently. Having visited Miyajima several times and making a different Itsukushima shrine drawing each time, but from this work, going straight over the sea, passing through the Torii gate, and approaching the main shrine, something like a sacred and brisk "Qi" is felt.
Around this time, Masao Ido became aware that "everyone is alive with a mission according to the will of the universe," and started thinking within himself that "born in continental China, nurtured with the sensitivity of the wilderness of Iwate, polished with the creative skills and sensibilities of Kyoto, and being connected with his ancestors through Hiroshima, it is not possible to fulfill one's mission even if one of these four genes is missing".
As a painter, he did not only draw pictures with his sensibility and skill, but also actively raised craftsmen and actively continued letting the world know what should be done for the future of dyeing and woodblock prints, which are the traditional techniques he encountered.
