コロナウィルスが猛威をふるう日々が続き、祇園祭の山鉾巡行は昨年に続き今年も中止となってしまいました。1150年前の平安時代、京の都で大流行した疫病を鎮めようと始まった祇園祭が、まさにその疫病によって中止になってしまうとは何とも皮肉な話です。
京都で生まれ育った者にとっては何とも寂しく頼りない気持ちでいたところ、先日四条通を通ると例年のように鉾立てをする光景を目にして驚きました。あとで分かったことですが、技術の継承のために鉾を建て、祇園囃子の練習も行われたそうです。釘を一本も使わず荒縄を巻き付けるだけで組み立てる技は、堅牢で且つとても美しいのです。音符が付いた譜面のない祇園囃子も同様で、いくら動画に記録できると言っても人から人にしか伝えられないものがあり、それを伝承するためには実際にやって見せ、やらせてみなくては伝わりません。
木版画も同じで、日本の素晴らしい伝承の技はどれも一旦途絶えるともう二度と元には戻せないものばかりです。
57年ぶりに日本で開かれたオリンピック、本来なら世界中からたくさんの人が訪日し、木版画をはじめ日本の文化や人々に触れて理解を深めてもらうチャンスであったのにと本当に残念です。
今月の作品は「打ち水」です。今では少なくなった、このような日本家屋にはアルミサッシもポリバケツもなく、やさしい木の肌触りからは日本人が大切に思うことや美しいと思うこと、そしてそこに暮らす人の凜とした背中までもが見えるようです。

“Uchimizu”
The Gion Festival has been cancelled for the second year in a row as the coronavirus continues to rage through the city, making it all the more ironic that the festival, which began 1,150 years ago in the Heian period (794-1185) as an attempt to quell an epidemic in Kyoto, has now been cancelled due to an outbreak.
As a person born and raised in Kyoto, I was
feeling sad and unreliable, but the other day when I passed Shijo Street, I was
surprised to see the floats being erected as usual. I found out later that they
built the floats to pass on the skills and to practice the Gion music. The
technique of assembling the floats without using a single nail, just wrapping a
rope around them, is both robust and beautiful. The same is true of the Gion
music, which has no musical notation, and even though it can be recorded on
video, there are some things that can only be passed on from person to person,
and in order to pass them on, you have to show them and let them do it.
The same is true of mokuhanga, a wonderful
Japanese craft which, once it is lost, can never be regained.
For the Olympics game that is going to be
held after 57 years, many people from all over the world were supposed to visit
Japan, and it was an opportunity for them to deepen their understand by get in
touch with Japanese culture and people commencing with woodblock print, but it
is quite unfortunate.
This month's artwork is
"Uchimizu". There are no aluminium sashes or polyethylene buckets in
this Japanese house, which are rare nowadays, and the gentle feel of the wood
seems to reveal what the Japanese people value and think is beautiful, and even
the dignified backs of the people who live there.
