源氏の庭
京都・廬山寺では梅雨入りから夏の終わり頃まで、薄紫の桔梗が代わる代わる咲いて微かな風に静かに揺れています。
千年前の平安時代には御所と寺町通りを挟んで東側に建つ廬山寺あたりには紫式部の生家があり、源氏物語はその生家で執筆されたと伝えられています。廬山寺にはそれを想起させるように紫色の桔梗が植えられています。
御所の周辺には今も平安時代から変わらず糸偏(いとへん)と言われる和装関連の仕事に関わる人たちが多く住んでいます。
井堂雅夫が染色家の内弟子であった10代の頃、いくつもの職方さん回りを任され、このあたりを自転車で走り回っていて、どこに何があるのか、御所のどこのベンチが休憩の特等席か、何でも熟知していたと懐かしげに話したことがありました。
その頃はすでに住み込みの内弟子という制度がなくなり始めた頃で、東北育ちの小柄で都会慣れしない少年であった井堂雅夫は、行く先々の職方さんにおやつをもらったりして可愛がられていたという話を、その頃のセピア色の写真に写る頼りなげな細い首筋の少年の姿を見て思わず納得するのでした。

“Rozanji Temple”
At Kyoto Rozanji Temple, the light purple bellflowers bloom and are gently swayed in the breeze, from the beginning of the rainy season until the end of summer.
In the Heian period, a thousand years ago, the birthplace of Murasaki Shikibu was located around Rozanji Temple, on the east side across Gosho (Imperial Palace) and Teramachi Street, and it is said that “Genji Monogatari” (The Tale of Genji) was written there. Purple bellflower is planted at the Rozanji Temple as to keep that memory alive.
Around Gosho, there are still many people participating in “itohen”, a term for activities related to Japanese traditional dressmaking.
Masao Ido once longingly related his memories of when he was an in-house apprentice to a dyer in his teen years. Back then, he was in charge of the logistics, and rode around here on his bicycle from one crafstam to another; he knew every inch of the place, even where to find the best bench to take a break.
At that time, the system of in-house apprentices had already started vanishing, and Masao Ido, was a boy who grew up in Tohoku and was unfamiliar with the city.
When I saw that thin, helpless looking boy in this old sepia picture, I could understand the stories I heard about how many craftsmen gave him snacks and were very kind to him.
