“Nishi Hongan-ji”
A fifteen-minute walk from Kyoto Station brings you to Nishi Hongan-ji Temple, where a magnificent roof of large, softly gleaming roof tiles lends the temple a dignified and imposing presence.
As autumn deepens, a great ginkgo
tree standing beside the Goeido Hall, said to be around 400 years old, turns a
brilliant golden yellow, transforming the surrounding landscape. According to
legend, this remarkable tree once helped protect the temple halls from a great
fire. Today, it remains an iconic symbol of Nishi Hongan-ji in autumn.
Whenever I learn that local
residents recognize this work immediately, exclaiming, “That’s Nishi
Hongan-ji!”, I am reminded of how deeply the temple is rooted in the community.
At such moments, I feel a profound sense of gratitude for the privilege of living
in Kyoto, where history and everyday life blend so naturally together.
The great ginkgo occupies half of
the composition, yet the artist deliberately depicts only a portion of the
tree. This striking compositional choice invites viewers to imagine the immense
scale and expansive reach of the actual tree.
